Things to do in Honolulu, Hawaii

In this post, we will cover the basics of Honolulu: its history as the capital of Hawaii for over a century and how it has evolved into one of America's most livable cities. Along with that, I'll share some tips on what to do in Honolulu if you're new resident or just visiting.

The History Of The Capital City Of Hawai'i (Honolulu): Hawaiian culture is rooted in family hierarchy where parents were considered "kapu" which means sacred. This belief system was at odds with Western influence so much so that King David Kalakaua abolished old Hawaiian laws called kapus in 1875 when he ascended to power after his brother died without an heir because they made doing business too difficult.

After he died in 1891, his sister Queen Lili'uokalani attempted to take back power from the white elites who had taken over and she tried to do this by reinstating kapus but her dreams were crushed on January 17th of 1893 when American troops came ashore at what is now Honolulu Harbor near downtown. The coup d’état was led by US Marines with the support of most of Native Hawaiian elite like Joseph Nawahi (who wanted a republic) and under guidance from President Cleveland who would have preferred annexation or joint-sovereignty without bloodshed.

Queen Lili'uokalani surrendered to the American military and was imprisoned in her own palace, so that she could not oppose them. She had no idea what would happen next because nobody told her it meant a new constitution with an elected government - all of which were done without consulting native Hawaiian people or their queen who ruled for 28 years under law known as the "Bayonet Constitution."

This new form of governance only lasted until 1898 when Hawaii became officially annexed by America under President McKinley's administration. And while most historians agree his motivations might have been pure, this also signaled the end of Polynesian monarchy on Earth and created waves across Asia where other monarchies like Japan still exist today.

What To Do In Honolulu If You're A New Resident: If you are new resident, shopping is a great way to get acquainted with the city and check out some of its offerings. This could mean going to Ala Moana Shopping Center which features department stores like Macy's, Nordstrom Rack, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, etc. as well as an outdoor area for dining that includes Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine among other restaurants.

Another option would be Manoa Marketplace where there are options for dining (including food trucks), retail shops and more! And if all else fails then just head down to Waikiki Beach because sunbathing plus shopping equals relaxation!

What To Do In Honolulu As A Tourist: Luckily, Honolulu is a great destination for tourists because there are so many things to do. Sailboats and catamarans can be rented within the harbor at Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, Pearl Harbor or Royal Hawaiian Center which means more time in Waikiki Beach with less cost!

If you're looking to see some of Hawaii's most famous landmarks then Diamond Head State Monument is usually tops on visitors' lists; it offers an incredible view of Oahu from its summit. The Nuuanu Pali Lookout Trailhead (just below this point) gives hikers access to beautiful coastal views as well as the ruins of an old sugar mill that was destroyed by Kamehameha I back in 1804 during one his expeditions against Kohala.

If you're looking for a more natural experience then the Waimea Valley State Park is great because of its beautiful views and old ruins that date back to 1797 when it was used as a retreat by Kamehameha I who would use this area to rest with his warriors during their battles up on Mauna Kea.
