It's the county seat of Marlboro County, as well as one of the two cities in that county The other being Dillon (also known for it's proximity to Myrtle Beach). It was first settled by Europeans before 1750s when they would start plantations and grow cotton along what is now Bennett Creek which flows through town next to US 301.
