Things to do in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Things Not Worth Visiting: The Governor's Mansion is closed on weekdays because of security concerns so no visit will be possible during the day time without special arrangements with their staff which you can't make over the phone or through email. I was able to schedule an appointment but it took several days before they responded back about my request and then another few hours before confirmation came that they fit me into their busy schedules. You need at least 72 hour notice if you are planning on going there any other day than the weekends.
The Zoo is by far the most disappointing zoo I've ever been to. It's small, it lacks any sort of animals and their enclosures are outdated. There was one family there when we went on a weekday afternoon so it felt like an amusement park without many people which isn't really what you expect from a zoo in my opinion at least.
Things Worth Visiting: -There seems to be this stigma that if you don't live near Baton Rouge then your life will not be as fulfilled because they have everything here and anything else would just pale in comparison if all you do is come for vacations but nothing more than that. I'm happy with where I am living now but want to visit again sometime soon; and I'll be sure to spend more time exploring the city and not just driving from one tourist destination to another.
Things You Should Do: -The Louisiana State Museum is a must see if you're looking for something in particular or are visiting Baton Rouge for any reason, really. It's free so it won't cost much but what they offer will give you insight into some of the history that has shaped this state as well as looks at life after Katrina which was an eventful period in our nation's recent past.
Walk Along Bayou Louise On North Boulevard Things That Are Worth Doing For Tourists But Might Not Be All That Great For Residents: The River Center Mall is the place to go if you're looking for a shopping experience. It's not quite as large or fancy as some of the other malls in Louisiana, but it does have one major advantage and that's their food court which has all sorts of good local restaurants where you can eat from before heading out again on your way home.
If you're looking for a place to stay then the Hilton Garden Inn in Downtown Baton Rouge is one of your best bets. It's not as modern or flashy as some other hotels, but it has everything that I needed and more while staying there my room had a king sized bed with plenty of space to get ready in the morning before heading out again during the day. There was also an indoor pool which was perfect considering how hot Louisiana can be sometimes.
